Choosing the right bathroom taps
The right tap makes a bathroom feel finished, and it is one of the details you touch every day. Start with where it will be used, then choose the style and finish.
Basin taps and mixers
- Mono basin mixers have one lever and one tap hole. They are the most popular choice for modern vanity units.
- Tall mono mixers sit higher, so they suit countertop basins and bowls.
- Wall-mounted basin mixers free up space on the basin, but the pipework is hidden in the wall, so decide before the tiling is done.
- Traditional basin taps come as a pair, with separate hot and cold, for a classic look.
Bath fillers and bath shower mixers
Bath fillers and bath shower mixers can be deck-mounted, wall-mounted or floor-standing. A freestanding bath usually has no tap holes, so you will need a floor-standing or wall-mounted option. Our freestanding bath buying guide explains what to plan for.
Bath and shower valves
Single-function valves control one outlet, such as the shower. Twin-function valves let you switch between the bath filler and the shower. Check which suits your layout before you buy.
Pick a finish that works with the whole room
Chrome is a timeless, easy-to-match choice. Matt black gives a bold, contemporary look, while brushed brass adds warmth. Try to keep finishes consistent between taps, shower fittings, accessories and your mirror, and check the handles on your vanity unit too.
Check before you buy
- How many tap holes does your basin have, and which tap type does it need?
- Is a waste included? Some taps are sold without one, so check the product details.
- Does the tap suit your water system? Ask us about pressure requirements if you are unsure.
- How tall is the tap compared with your basin, so water does not splash?

Bathroom tap FAQs
What is a mono basin mixer?
A mono basin mixer is a single tap that mixes hot and cold water through one lever or handle. It needs just one tap hole in the basin or vanity top.
Do I need a waste for my basin tap?
Yes, every basin needs a waste. Some taps include one and some do not, so check the product description when you order.
Which tap finish is best for a bathroom?
It is down to taste. Chrome is the most versatile, matt black suits contemporary rooms, and brushed brass adds warmth. Choosing one finish for the whole room gives the cleanest result.
Can I use wall-mounted taps on any basin?
Wall-mounted taps need a basin with no tap hole and pipework concealed in the wall, so they should be planned before tiling begins.
